Zollie Bowling Obituary

Chatsworth, Georgia - Zollie Bowling, 83, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, August 21st, 2025. He was born on October 3rd, 1941, in Hazard, Kentucky, to the late Granville and Mollie Couch Bowling.

He was preceded in death by his six brothers—Jack, Alister, Oneal, Rettig ("Tater"), Max Dean, and Bargene—and one sister, Mary.

Zollie is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Brenda Sue Hubbs Bowling; three daughters, Patty (Brock) Woodall, Judean (Paul) Guinn, and Christina (Michael) McLain; and eight beloved grandchildren, Peyton (Eric) Kerke, Bayley Gable, Cora Mae McLain, Samuel Woodall, Judah Woodall, Molly McLain, Jude Guinn, and Lindsey McLain.

Raised in Eastern Kentucky, Zollie graduated from Carr Creek High School in Knott County. After high school, he moved to Dayton, Ohio, where he worked at McCall's Printing Company before serving proudly in the United States Navy. While in the Navy, he went on a blind date with Brenda. Merely two weeks later, Zollie asked her to be his wife. Together they shared and cherished 58 years, building a life centered on faith, family, and service.

In 1974, Zollie moved his family to Chatsworth, Georgia, where he began his career as one of the first Power House Operators at Carter's Dam. He became an active member of First Baptist Church of Chatsworth, where he served faithfully as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, youth camp counselor, and a member of the Wednesday night kitchen crew. His greatest joy, however, was working alongside his closest friends on the Tuesday Work Crew. Together they prayed for their families, church, and community while maintaining the church building. They found great purpose and laughter in furthering their ministry to build ramps for families in need across Murray County.

As the father of three daughters, Zollie developed a deep love for girls' sports. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he coached hundreds of young athletes in basketball and softball. Beloved by his players, he was known for his encouragement, dedication, and passion for the game. He was especially proud to coach the first girls' softball team from Murray County to win a State Championship. In his later years, Zollie found joy in reminiscing about those seasons and continued cheering from the sidelines as his grandchildren carried on his love of sports.

Zollie was the ultimate Kentucky Wildcats basketball fan. If you spotted him out and about, he was almost always wearing his Kentucky hat. He cherished opportunities to attend games at the Rupp Arena, and he loved watching, rewatching, and even listening to Kentucky basketball.

His greatest legacy was his unwavering faith in his Savior, Jesus Christ. Zollie lived out his faith daily, serving as a role model for his family and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He loved deeply—especially his family, his friends, his church, and his community. He lived life to the fullest, laughed often, and left a lasting mark of kindness, joy, and faithfulness on all who crossed his path.

Visitation will begin on Saturday, August 30th, at 1:00 pm at the First Baptist Church in Chatsworth. The Memorial Service will follow at 4:00 pm. Rev. George Ross and Rev. Tommy Crider will officiate the service. For everyone attending the visitation and Memorial Services,t he family requests that you wear either your favorite Hawaiian shirt or Kentucky apparel.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Tuesday Work Crew (Lamp Stand) 121 West Market Street Chatsworth, GA 30705, in Zollie's honor.
