James Terrel (Terry) Ross, peacefully went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ surrounded by his loving family on March 31, 2025. Terry was born on March 20, 1947 in Dalton, Georgia. He is preceded in death by his parents, James L. Ross and Blanche Ross; and brother, Hal Ross.
He is survived by his loving wife, Gail, of 55 wonderful years; son Ty Ross (Jennifer) of Varnell; daughter Kara Cook (Mark) of Cohutta; son Seth Ross (Megan) of Cohutta; daughter Jaime Ross-McBrien (Anthony) of Richmond, Virginia; sister Gayla Deviney-Ross (Brent) of Cohutta; grandchildren include James Ross, Beau Ross, Jenny Cook, George Ross, Ally Jo Cook, Charlotte Cook, and Elliott McBrien. Also survived by special nieces and nephews; Matt Ross, Ryan Ross, Haley Ross, Mallory Bailey, and Cory Stanley.
He was a graduate of North Whitfield High School, where he excelled as captain of the football, basketball, and baseball teams. His passion for baseball continued at North Georgia College before he transferred to the University of Georgia, where he was a member of the ROTC. Terry proudly and honorably served his country as an Army Captain during the Vietnam era.
Terry dedicated himself to his community and his faith. He was a lifelong member of Grove Level Baptist Church serving as a deacon and a Gideon. Terry was the proud owner of Rave Carpets, with locations in Dalton, Georgia, Oak Ridge and Sweetwater, Tennessee. During his retirement, he enjoyed co-ownership of The Barn at Ross Farm in Cohutta, Georgia.
He was a founding member of the Northwest Whitfield High School Quarterback Club. He was also a past president of the Northwest Whitfield High School PTA. He was an officer in the Cohutta Ruritan Club. A Master Mason for over 50 years and a valued member of the local Masonic Lodge. He served on the Whitfield County School Board and was instrumental in the founding and construction of the Career Academy. He also generously served on the Board of Directors for Cheer Haven. He loved cheering on his beloved Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves.
Terry's greatest joy was his family. He loved watching his children and grandchildren grow up and never missed an opportunity to attend their sporting events and competitions. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be deeply missed.
Julian Peeples Funeral Home, Dalton, is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive family and friends at Grove Level Baptist Church, 2802 Cleveland Highway, Dalton, Georgia 30721 with visitation on Friday, April 4 from 11:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. and funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. Officiating is Senior Pastor Charlie Bridges. Terry will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
