Erle White Miles Jr. Obituary
Gainesville, Georgia - Erle Miles passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025. He was 88 and a half years old.
He left us with wonderful memories that will keep us all smiling and laughing for years.
Erle's friendly and outgoing personality made him a special favorite to everyone he met.
He was loved by many and described by friends he made living in Dalton as an icon
who will be greatly missed.
Erle was born to Erle Miles Sr and Maude Terrell Miles. His father was a pilot for
Eastern Airlines and a farmer in Roswell GA. His mother was a teacher who loved all
things artistic. Erle obtained his college education from Presbyterian College. One
summer after graduating, he took a surveying job for on oil company which led him to
Wakefield Virginia where he met the love of his life, Kay. He did such a great job
"surveying" he landed a marriage that lasted over 66 years.
Erle accepted a job at Textile Rubber and Chemical in the late 1960's which prompted a
move to Dalton, GA. After gaining some experience in the carpet industry thru Textile
Rubber, he discovered the need for more quality control outside the manufacturer's and
with the assistance of another partner, established Commercial Testing in 1974. He
remained the company President until 1995, at that time expecting full retirement. The
full retirement lasted three weeks, before another lab testing opportunity arose and he
started Testing Services. Finally at the young age of 80 did Erle retire from Testing
Services, leaving his son, who had worked side by side with him for 35 years to take
over. Testing Services continues today to provide testing of carpet, hard surface,
artificial turf and playgrounds, both in the lab and all over the country. Erle was very
active in ASTM, as well many other test organizations, and before his retirement, was
one of the founding members of the Synthetic Turf Council.
Erle loved his family deeply and they were the center of everything that he did. He
worked tirelessly to provide his two children with a college education plus a law school
education for his daughter, Kelly, who has practiced law in Gainesville, GA for over 41
years. Both Erle's children were active in sports throughout school and Erle and Kay
rarely missed an event. Erle served as a deacon at the First Presbyterian Church in
Dalton and member of the Dalton Golf and Country Club. He kept an immaculate yard
and was a handy man who could fix anything. His real joy were his two granddaughters.
The giggles were endless when they were together. He loved his dogs and Dawgs,
sitting on the back porch relaxing watching all of the wildlife, flipping thru the newspaper
or eating ice cream. Quite simply, Erle loved life.
Erle is survived by his wife, Kathleen (Kay) Miles, his daughter Kelly Miles, son Erle
Miles III, granddaughters RyLee and Addison Miles, his sister Margaret Anne Mitchell,
and his sister in law and son, Sandra Goodwyn and Wade Goodwyn.
