Benjamin "Ben" Townsend Mosteller Obituary

Smyrna, GA - Benjamin "Ben" Townsend Mosteller, age 39, of Smyrna, GA, with deep childhood and family roots in Dalton and Chatsworth, GA, passed into glory on Wednesday, October 29, at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta after a faithful life and a hard-fought battle with brain cancer.

Ben was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend whose deep faith and love for Jesus shaped his life. A gifted and passionate high school teacher and coach, most recently at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta, he inspired curiosity, confidence, and joy in his students every day. Ben earned his master's degree in history from the College of Charleston, which inspired his goals as an educator to spark an appreciation for social studies, nurture respect for others, build generous character, and cultivate a genuine love of learning. His classroom and coaching overflowed with kindness, wonder, humility, and grace—qualities celebrated by both his peers and his students.

A lifelong traveler who visited nearly every continent, Ben brought his love of culture, food, and discovery into his classroom and daily life. Someone once said Ben was often the most interesting person in the room—curious, quick-witted, and full of life experiences—yet he carried it all with humility and grace, never thinking of himself above others and always valuing each person as a beautiful soul created by God. Steadfast, loving, and servant-hearted, he naturally brought out the best in others. He sought out the lonely, befriended the homeless, sang in the choir, cooked incredible meals (Christmas frittatas were a family favorite), laughed easily and often, and built community with his wife Leslie wherever they lived.

Ben and Leslie shared a beautiful love story and true partnership. They met in Charleston, SC, and spent their early years traveling and studying across the world. Together, they lived each day fully—bringing the fun (and the crab cakes!) to every family gathering—and continued that tradition with their precious daughters. Ben was a devoted and hilarious girl dad who adored Ada and Mae and loved spending time with his nieces and nephews. He carried a strong sense of purpose until his last day and believed, even through the darkest valleys of illness, that God is good, He is for us, and He is writing a redemptive, beautiful story through Ben's life and legacy.

Ben is survived by his loving wife of 15+ years, Leslie Davison Mosteller; his daughters, Ada Joan (5) and Margaret "Mae" Eliza (3); his parents, Randy and Suzanne Mosteller of Dalton, GA; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Tucker and Erika Mosteller of Dalton, and Will and Lauren Mosteller of Birmingham, AL; his sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Luis Muñoz-Mosteller of Pichilemu, Chile; his parents-in-law, John and Ruthie Buechele of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his brother- and sister-in-law, Christopher and Sarah Buechele of Mt. Pleasant, and his sister-in-law, Allie Buechele of Mt. Pleasant. He was deeply close with his extended family and is also survived by his cherished grandmother, Betty Jean Mosteller of Chatsworth, GA, along with beloved aunts, uncles, and twelve nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Ben.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Bobby Mosteller, and grandparents Estelle and Calvin Townsend.
