Thelma's Story

Thelma Lee Lewis Humberd was born in Whitfield County on April 24, 1921, to the late Joe and Laura Lewis. She was married to the late Calvin "Poss" Humberd. As a young person, she attended and was a member of Concord Baptist Church in Cohutta where she was a member of the Concord Women's Quartet along with friends Blanche and Modelle Sutton and sister, Lucille. In later years she attended Sugar Creek United Methodist Church. She was well known for her love of gardening, fishing and her famous chocolate pies. She was the owner and manager of Humberd's Grocery. She helped many people when they were down on their luck and tried to provide not only friendly service but kindness as well.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Humberd; and grandson, Joshua Humberd, of Cleveland, Tenn.; parents, Joe and Laura Lewis; brothers, Clyde Lewis; sisters-in-law and spouses, Ethel and Clifford Lewis, Pearl and Wilburn Lewis, Ruth and Hoyt Lewis, and Ruby of Cohutta; sister, Lucille Burgner and brother-in-law, Don, of Cleveland, Tenn.
She is survived by her son, Larry Humberd; daughter, Susan Humberd; daughter, Carolyn Humberd Ellis and son-in-law Jimmy Ellis; granddaughters, Shara Smith Troutner and husband John, Jami Ellis Standridge and Jennifer Ellis of Cleveland, Tenn.; great-grandsons, Alex, Joshua (London) and Nate Smith of Cleveland, Tenn.; brother, Willard Ernest Lewis and sister-in-law Betty of Cleveland, Tenn.; sister, Jean McIntire and brother-in-law Eugene of Crandall; dear friend and sister-in-law, Amy Fowler and sister-in-law, Gladys Humberd, of Cleveland, Tenn.; several nephews and nieces, friends and other extended family members.
Visitation is today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Union Missionary Baptist Church, 797 Hughes Lake Road, Cleveland.
A celebration of life service will be at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Jason Humberd and the Rev. Jerry Herron officiating the service.
A graveside service is at 11 a.m. Friday in Sugar Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews Lynn Lewis, Carl Lewis, Joe McIntire, Ernie and Joe Lewis, Dennis and Donnie Burgner. Great-grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sugar Creek Cemetery Association, in care of Scott Humberd at 487 Hawkins Road, S.E., Cleveland, TN 37323.
