Mr. J.B. Whitfield, age 91, of Calhoun, Georgia, departed this life Tuesday morning, August 29, 2017 at Calhoun Health Care. J.B was born July 3, 1926 in Gordon County, Georgia a son of the late Judson Doc and Avery Watkins Whitfield. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-three years, Robbie Lee Billie Wilson Whitfield, his son, Danny, a granddaughter, Erica Taggart, seven brothers, Otis, Vernon, Troy, Lloyd, Rip, Harlan and Buren Whitfield and two sisters, Ollie Pass and Lucille Baker.
J.B. loved singing Gospel Music and sang across the United States and in Canada. He sang and played at hundreds of funerals in the area. He was honored to have sung before five governors and one president. J.B. loved to play the guitar, piano, bass, and mandolin and taught guitar lessons to many in the area. He is a member of the Smithsonian Southern Gospel Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Peacemaker, Georgia Jubilers, and The Profits quartets. Many know him from over 40 years with Western Auto. He was a member of the Oostanaula Masonic Lodge for 60 years. J.B. proudly served in the Navy for three years as a Ship Navigator during World War II.
J.B. is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Linda and Calvin Anderson of Calhoun and Peggy and Lance Taggart of Chelsia, Alabama; grandchildren, Ken and Michelle Anderson, Dena and Byron Washington, Phillip and Andrea Anderson, Brian and Tonuya Anderson and Amy and Jason Redden; nineteen great-grandchildren, eleven great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Services to celebrate the life of Mr. J.B. Whitfield will be held Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Heritage Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Brent Davis, Reverend Lamar Bearden and Stoney Ponders officiating. He will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife at Fain Cemetery with Ken Anderson, Phillip Anderson, Matt Widener, Skyler Anderson, Brian Anderson, Mike Rutledge, Rick Fuller and Riley Anderson serving as pallbearers. Graveside honors will be provided by the Dalton American Legion Post #112.
Singing by Dyanne Austin and a choir consisting of friends and church members who desire to join in.
The family will receive friends at the Heritage Baptist Church, (345 Curtis Parkway S.E., Calhoun, GA) from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Friday and after 12:00 p.m. noon until the service.
