George Vernon Coker, age 81, of Varnell, passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at his residence following a brief illness.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Margie Garmany Coker; brothers and sisters-in-law, Noel Coker, Roy and Katherine Coker, Ray and Mary Coker and Leon and Juanita Coker; sisters and brothers-in-law, Alean and Virgil Carroll, Louise and Steve Stephens and Hazel and Ed Ryan; sister-in-law, Louise Coker; brothers-in-law, Sonny Garmany and Lamar Overton.
George was born November 1, 1935, son of the late John Harrison and Ida Elrod Coker. He was born and raised on the Coker farm where he eventually built his own home and raised his family. He was the owner of Coker Construction and built custom homes for over 30 years. Even in retirement, he stayed busy with building projects and his garden. George was a proud member of the North Whitfield High School class of 1955. George was of the Baptist faith.
Mr. Coker is survived by his fiancé, Lorene Dean of Dalton; children and spouses, Mike and Laura Coker of Varnell, Vickie and Bobby Boswell of Dalton and Ron and Kathy Coker of Clarkesville, GA; grandchildren and families, Traci and Bradley Brown (Kyler Bass), Mandi Webb (Kelsi Webb), Michelle and Chris Suddeth (Addison Hall), Mindy Coker (Jerick and Derick Campbell), Allie and Michael Severin and George Coker; brother and lifelong best friend, Earl Coker of Chatsworth; sister, Nellie Overton of Dalton; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Mack Nottingham and Joann and George Norris several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive.
The funeral service will be held Friday, September 22, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at the Pleasant Grove Chapel of Julian Peeples Funeral Home with Rev. Stacy Hensley officiating. Burial will be in Varnell Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 1:00 p.m. until the service time at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Dalton, P.O. Box 2477, Dalton, GA 30722
