Mr. John Henry "Paw Paw" Lumpkin, age 81, of Dalton, Georgia, departed this life Friday afternoon, December 29, 2017 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family.
Henry was born July 30, 1936 in Whitfield County, Georgia, a son of the late Johnnie Dee and Bertha Ray Lumpkin. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Dimple Mathis Lumpkin and sons, John Billy Lumpkin and Rodney Michael Lumpkin and an infant sister, Virginia Ruth Lumpkin.
Henry retired from Shaw Industries in 1999 to spend more time with his wife, kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. He enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing, gardening and traveling. He spent a lot of time on his houseboat with family at Harrison Bay. He owned a houseboat for fifty-five years. He was an active member of the FFA Alumni and attended many 4H/FFA Livestock Shows around Georgia and Tennessee. Henry was a loving, unselfish, very hard working man. He loved his family more than anything and was a "Paw Paw" to many.
He is survived by his loving wife of thirty-four years, Sharon LeRoy Lumpkin of the residence; daughter, Henrietta Cameron; sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Sheila Lumpkin, Zack and Tesha Lumpkin, Deborah Lumpkin, and Darlene Lumpkin; special friend, Frank Cameron; grandchildren, Chris Lumpkin, Rodney and Amy Lumpkin, Kim and Stuart Speer, Missy and John White, Keith and Beatriz Lumpkin, Kevin and Tina Lumpkin, John and Tabitha Cameron, Stephen and Tiffani Cameron, Matthew and Jennifer Cameron, Madi Lumpkin, Mia Lumpkin and Ace Lumpkin; sisters and brother-in-law, Margaret Wofford and Mary Lee and Harold Gazaway; brother, William Lumpkin; mother-in-law, Jean Jordan; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Rebecca Sane and Patricia and David Rymer; twenty-two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, many nieces nephews and cousins.
Services to celebrate the life of Mr. John Henry Lumpkin will be held Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Ponders Melrose Chapel with Reverend Ronald Guffey officiating. He will be laid to rest at Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery in Dalton, Georgia, with Reverend Darey Kittle in charge of graveside rites. Pallbearers will be Chris Lumpkin, John Cameron, Keith Lumpkin, Kevin Lumpkin, Stephen Cameron, Matthew Cameron, Rodney Lumpkin, Stuart Speer and Ace Lumpkin.
The family will receive friends at Ponders Melrose Chapel from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 11:00 a.m. Wednesday until the service hour.
